Western Australian writer Jamey Claffey named as a finalist in Netflix’s The Next Brilliant Career

Western Australian writer and scripted developer Jamey Claffey has been selected as the Western Australian finalist for Netflix ANZ’s The Next Brilliant Career, a national initiative supporting the next generation of women and non-binary screen storytellers.

Jamey is one of eight emerging Australian writers who was selected to pitch an original scripted concept to the Netflix ANZ Content team in Sydney this week, receiving direct invaluable feedback as she develops her story for the screen.

Jamey has worked in script and story editing roles within BBC TV Drama Commissioning and BBC Studios, and assistant produced radio plays for BBC Radio 4. Her credits include River City for BBC Scotland and The Replacement for Left Bank Pictures.

Since returning to Australia, Jamey has script consulted on multiple Audible Original dramas and comedies. She continues to freelance in scripted TV development and is working on several prestige drama series for Australian producers.

Jamey’s writing is shaped by her experiences having lived across regional WA, Perth and overseas. Her pilot for comedy romance series Archetypal received the Bold Voice Award from Writers Lab International in 2025.

In 2026, Jamey was the recipient of the Bill Warnock Talent Accelerator, a Screenwest initiative designed to develop her creative skills as a screenwriter and progress her slate of projects.

The Next Brilliant Career takes its inspiration from pioneering Australian author Miles Franklin and her determination to tell stories on her own terms. The initiative was launched in August alongside Netflix’s series My Brilliant Career, based on Franklin’s celebrated novel, and reflects a shared commitment to fostering diverse talent and creating opportunities for emerging Australian voices.

Jamey Claffey, Finalist for Western Australia said “Being a finalist means an incredible fast track to a team of people who are making amazing Australian screen stories. As an emerging writer, it’s often a long and convoluted road to get your work in front of industry decisionmakers. I’m so grateful to Netflix for the opportunity to not only meet the commissioning team, but to receive direct feedback on my project. And I can’t wait to meet the cohort of talented women who are on the cusp of their screenwriting careers!”
