Screenwest announces professional skills development opportunities on ‘Last Days of the Space Age’ in NSW

Screenwest and Princess Pictures are supporting up to four Western Australian screen professionals to further their careers through a skills development opportunity in NSW on Last Days of the Space Age – starring Deborah Mailman, Jesse Spencer and Radha Mitchell – which is one of nine Australian original series recently announced by The Walt Disney Company Australia & New Zealand for Disney+.

The program aims to provide on the job training for Western Australian screen practitioners to further their career and skills by working with experienced industry professionals. The program will fund up to four mid-career WA screen practitioner attachments across the following departments:

Above the line

  • Producers
  • Directors

Below the line

  • Production
  • Art Department
  • Camera
  • Lighting
  • Costume
  • Hair and Makeup
  • Post-Production (during physical production)

The attachments will work closely with a Head of Department for a period of up to six weeks between early June and the end of September 2022 in NSW, primarily Sydney. Actual dates will be determined; however, there will be a preference for the Attachment to commence as soon as available.

People living with disability, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and people from culturally diverse backgrounds are encouraged to apply.

About the series

Last Days of the Space Age is an eight-part dramedy series set in 1979 Western Australia, when Perth was at the centre of the world’s headlines. A power strike threatens to plunge the region into darkness, while the city hosts the iconic Miss Universe pageant and the US space station, Skylab, crashes just beyond the city’s suburbs. Against this backdrop of international cultural and political shifts, three families in a tight-knit coastal community find their marriages, friendships, and futures put to the test.

The series is a Disney+ Australian original series produced by Princess Pictures and directed by Bharat Nalluri (Spooks, The 100). The series is created and written by David Chidlow (Moving On, Hidden) along with writers Alice Addison (The Devil’s Playground, Picnic at Hanging Rock), Western Australian Dot West (The Heights), and Jeremy Nguyen & Alan Nguyen (Hungry Ghosts). Laura Waters (Summer Heights High, My Year 12 Life), Emma Fitzsimons (Koala Man, Wrong Kind of Black), Chris Loveall (Fortitude, Please Like Me), Stephanie Swedlove (Everything’s Gonna Be Okay, Please Like Me) and Anna Dokoza (Kevin Can F**k Himself, Special) serve as Executive Producers and Christine Pham (The Unsettling, Please Like Me) is producing the series.
