What to watch & play over summer

Catch up on some Screenwest-supported films, series and digital games this summer.

ABC iview

• • Kangaroo Beach Season 3 (G) – a sun-soaked seaside paradise, populated by a kooky cast of colourful animals. This seemingly idyllic haven is never far from peril, but beachgoers are safe, thanks to the courageous lifesavers on patrol.
  • Maggie Beer’s Big Mission (G) – Maggie Beer, leads an ambitious world first social experiment to transform the meals and dining experience at an aged care home.
  • Ningaloo Nyinggulu (G) – Tim Winton takes us on a journey to one of the last intact wild places left on Earth. Its First Peoples call this global treasure Nyinggulu. The rest of us know it as Ningaloo.
  • Tales From Outer Suburbia (G) (debuts 1 January) – A clever ‘almost thirteen’ year old and her younger brother move to Outer Suburbia with their newly single mother. Their summer holiday turns into a series of unexpected and surreal adventures as they adapt to their new reality.

• • Aussie Gold Hunters (PG) – Teams of gold prospectors take a gamble to strike it big, deep in the wild west of outback Australia.
  • RUN (MA 15+) (debuts 1 January) – follows the life of the ingenious crim-on-the-run, eluding police and twice escaping maximum security prisons.
  • The Twelve: Cape Rock Killer (MA 15+) – A cold case from 1968 is re-opened for jury consideration when a man is charged with the murder of a woman who was researching the case for a true crime novel

• • Shipwreck Hunters Australia – Seasons 1 and 2 (PG) – Follows a fearless team of ocean adventurers as they deep dive to find – and bring to life – some of the world’s most epic shipwreck stories.

 

Netflix

• • Blueback (PG) – Follows Abby, a child who befriends a magnificent wild blue grouper while diving. When Abby realizes that the fish is under threat, she takes inspiration from her activist mum, Dora, and takes on poachers to save her friend.
  • How to Please a Woman (M) – When her all-male house-cleaning business gets out of control, a mature woman must embrace her own sexuality, if she is to make a new life for herself.
  • Red Dog (PG) – Based on the legendary true story of the Red Dog who united a disparate local community while roaming the Australian outback in search of his long-lost master.

 

Paramount+ and Network 10

• • Ghosts Australia (M) – Kate inherits a haunted mansion and gains the ability to see ghosts. With her partner Sean, she plans to convert it into a boutique hotel, unaware of the spirits’ presence and their potential impact on their lives.

 

Prime Video

• • Below (MA 15+) – In a near-future, darknet grifter Dougie is recruited to work security at a refugee detention centre. There, he is drawn into an underground operation blackmailing detainees to fight for profit. When tragedy strikes courageous fighter Azad, Dougie locates his hitherto dormant conscience and takes a stand.
  • H is for Happiness (PG) – A twelve-year-old girl with boundless optimism and a unique view of the world, is inspired by the strange new boy at school and sets out to mend her broken family – whatever it takes.
  • Runt (PG) – Follows ten-year-old Annie and Runt, her stray dog, as they attempt to win the Agility Course Championship at the Krumpets Dog Show in London in order to save their family’s farm from drought and misery.

• • Big Backyard Quiz (M) – A cheeky quiz show exploring the history and culture of Australia from a Blak (Indigenous) lens, featuring comedians and Indigenous talent.
  • Our Medicine (M) – A behind-the-scenes look at the frontline of Australia’s strained medical services, shining a light on First Nations professionals working to achieve better health outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander patients and communities.
  • Reckless (MA 15+) – Feuding siblings must cooperate after a hit-and-run accident in Fremantle leads to unexpected chaos throughout their community.

  • The Surfer (MA 15+) – A man returns to the idyllic beach of his childhood to surf with his son. When he is humiliated by a group of locals, the man is drawn into a conflict that keeps rising and pushes him to his breaking point.

• • Proclivitas (MA 15+) (in cinemas 19 February) – A grieving woman reconnects with her teenage sweetheart – awaking a terrifying demon determined to possess her.
