Heartwarming WA documentary series, ‘New Leash on Life’ premiering on ABC 4 July

ABC and Screenwest are pleased to announce that New Leash on Life, supported through the joint Factual Formats Initiative, will premiere on Tuesday 4 July at 8:00pm on ABC TV and ABC iview.

Each year thousands of dogs across Australia are impounded for a variety of reasons. Renowned WA-raised comedian Joel Creasey teams up with leading dog behaviourist Laura V as they try to reduce the number of dogs in pounds. Together they rescue, train and pair each dog with a family or person in need of a new best friend.

But these matches can be complex, and Laura must ensure the dog will work well in the prospective new home, and just as importantly, that the owner is the right fit for the dog. Through a series of touching encounters and activities, New Leash on Life takes you on an emotional journey as the show highlights the healing power of canine companionship.

Launched in 2022, the ABC Factual Formats Initiative is a major Western Australian joint initiative designed to discover the next great returnable factual series out of Western Australia.

“We’re so pleased to have supported the series through the ABC Factual Formats Initiative, which has helped to further shine a light on the incredible, high-quality factual storytelling here in WA. We look forward to seeing the series resonate with a wide range of audiences, with a subject that’s close to home for so many Australians. Congratulations to the Artemis team.” said Rikki Lea Bestall, Screenwest CEO.

New Leash on Life is produced by Artemis Media’s Hannah Pocock and Nia Pericles, who also serves as executive producer alongside Celia Tait. Artemis has had an incredible year so far, with acclaimed three-part ABC documentary series Ningaloo Nyinggulu premiering in May. The WA production company will also see the fourth season of the hit series Every Family Has a Secret and Australia’s Sleep Revolution with Dr Michael Mosley premiere on SBS in 2023 and 2024, respectively.

“New Leash on Life is a heartwarming series for everyone, for those who don’t know much about dogs and for dog lovers. The unlucky hounds who end up in pounds in Australia can be euthanised after just seven days. We hope this series opens eyes to the wonderful joy of rescue dogs and helps people understand more about our four legged friends, so that fewer find themselves behind bars facing an uncertain future.” said Nia Pericles, New Leash on Life Producer/Executive Producer.

New Leash on Life will premiere on ABC TV and ABC iview on Tuesday, 4 July at 8:00pm.

Production Credit: New Leash on Life is an Artemis Media production financed with the assistance of ABC and Screenwest.
